I am an artist and illustrator based near the Essex-Cambridgeshire-Suffolk borders, living on top of a hill beside a windmill.
I paint with gouache and acrylic, draw with pen and ink, and make copious numbers of monoprints on layout paper.
My sketchbooks are for recording information I might use in paintings. What does the wall in a tube station look like? How are cafe chairs constructed? What are the gestures people make when using mobile phones? Sketchbooks are full of experiments, too - and surprising and quirky characters that appear from nowhere.
I usually create paintings of people doing things in which there is a suggestion of the story of their day, their lives, or their thoughts. A quiet pause sitting on a bench, a momentary interaction between strangers, a walk home along the street carrying the shopping.
I illustrate fairy tales, folk tales, science fiction stories, and poems. I work on self-initiated projects based on different themes: it could be jars and packets, Edwardian photographs, football, fish on plates, or creating small paper dolls.
